The 59th aerospace medicine conference Was Held in Bengaluru

The 59th annual conference of the Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine (ISAM) will be held at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine.

The conference, titled 'Extraordinary Times: Changing Aero-medical Paradigms', will be held on November 20 and 21. It will focus on the aero-medical effects of the pandemic on aircrew health and will include multiple sessions comprising presentations of scientific papers, posters and guest lectures.

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal R K S Bhadauria will inaugurate the conference, which will be attended by experts from the field of aerospace medicine, both military and civil, aircrew, members of the civil aviation industry and representatives from DRDO.

Due to the pandemic-induced restrictions, the conference will have 75 delegates from various institutes present physically and around 200 participants will participate online.

The 'Subroto Mukherji Memorial Oration' will be delivered online by Dr Scott A Shappel, Professor and Chairman of Human Factors & Systems and Behavioural Neurobiology, from the United States.

The 'AVM Srinagesh Memorial Oration' will be presented by Wing Commander S N Sharma (Retd), Senior Cardiologist at Badr Al Samaa Hospital, Muscat, Oman.

Senior officers from the medical fraternity of the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force (IAF) will participate in the Conference. Also, representatives from friendly foreign countries and a total of 300 distinguished professionals will attend the Conference.

ISAM will have scientific sessions where the speakers will hold discussions, including aeromedical issues and advances that are made in the field of aviation medicine worldwide. 

ISAM conference will have two orations.

The Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee Memorial Oration will be delivered by Dr K Vijaraghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. 

Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee Memorial Oration was instituted in 1972 in honour of the first Indian Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) of Indian Air Force (IAF), Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee. 

Secondly, Air Vice Marshal Srinagesh Memorial Oration will be delivered by Air Vice Marshal (Retd) JS Kulkarni. 

Air Vice-Marshal Srinagesh Memorial Oration was instituted in the memory of Air Vice Marshal MM Srinagesh. He was famously known as the Father of Aviation Medicine in India for his immense contribution in the field of aerospace medicine. 

The JHF Manekshaw panel will be delivered by Dr Girish S Deodhare, Director, Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), and Dr Unnikrishnan Nair, Director, Human Spaceflight Project, ISRO. 

The Conference will have a special session by the Directorate of Aerospace Safety. 

The Conference will also include Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions on medicine and surgery. 

The scientific sessions and panel discussions will cover a wide range of areas, including Aerospace Physiology, Human in Space Programme, Clinical and Operational Aerospace Medicine, Civil Aviation Medicine, and Aeromedical Decision Making.
